Topps Chrome Baseball

With this much to collect, it’s whole new ballgame.

Overview

We’ll admit it. We have a fun job.

The dynamic duo of Unarmed Media and Lighthouse Creative reached out to us about producing a hype-filled trailer for their client Topps, who was releasing their highly-coveted Topps Chrome Baseball cards.

They had a script and the card images, but they were looking for a design approach and a creative direction for the video. So we were going in with a blank slate.

We just had a single mandate: make it awesome.

Production

Collectors want to know what to look out for in a new set, and this one had a lot to make it noteworthy. You got your rookie cards, your autographed cards, cards with all kinds of tricked-out designs, super-rare cards, cards with tacos on them (that’s right, tacos!) and a bunch of brand new card types making their debut.

With so much to look out for in this set, we had a lot of ground to cover. The key was to capture the suspense and excitement every collector feels when they’re about to open that pack of cards and find out what’s inside.

We took a cinematic approach to showing off the cards — using sweeping 3D camera moves, quick cuts, and a high-energy soundtrack. We supported this with animated text, snappy motion design, and even a well-placed aspect ratio change.
